Gayeon Lee for me is the designer who's designs are unique and beautiful but also so wearable. I have now been to see Gayeon Lee the past 2 years at London Fashion Week and each time I fall in love with the innovative ways she pulls fabrics, textures and colours together to build a piece.
Gayeon has been selected to collaborate with Swarovski for both seasons last year and also won the Vogue Talents award in 2016; she is definitely a designer to watch...
Hi Gayeon! Tell me a bit about your childhood and how you feel that has influenced you today?
I have always loved two things; dressing up and drawing. My mum loved dressing me up in pretty clothes when I was a little girl, so fashion has always been around me. I remember my notebook being filled with sketches of clothes and female figures grouwing up. When I was younger I had lots of ideas for clothing designs and I always wanted to turn my design ideas into reality.
How did you get started in the fashion industry?
I graduated from the MA Fashion Womenswear course at Central Saint Martins in 2013. After gratuation I got to work in both London and New York for several luxury labels including Marc Jacobs. This really allowed me to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the luxury market, and this later led to the launch of my own label in 2014.
What’s the best part of your job?
Working alongside a great, trustworthy team is definetly the best part of my job!
What is your absolute favourite piece that you have ever created within your collections?
I wish I could pick one, but every piece and every season are valued equally to me.
What were your biggest challenges in starting up a fashion business?
My biggest challenge was not having enough knowledge on how the logistics of how a business operates. That and learning about the finances!
What makes Gayeon Lee stand out?
My designs are made to make every woman feel beautiful.
What’s been your biggest pinch me moment with Gayeon Lee?
When I received an email from Lady Gaga’s team right after I graduated from the Central Saint Martins Masters.
What inspires you?
Everyday real-life women, art, film and books!
What’s your average day like?
My day starts by working on emails, then I go to the studio to work on my collection. At the end of the day I come home and cook my dinner, watch TV and then finally I go to bed!
Do you think you have a work/life balance?
More so now than when I first started, but it is a work in progress!
What words do you live by?
Don’t be a pushover!
What’s next for Gayeon Lee?
Thinking about designs for my AW20 collection.
