The 2 Night Travel Guide to Essaouira, Morocco

Essaouira is like Marrakech's chilled out cousin, relaxed and even friendlier. Though one of Morocco's smaller cities; Essaouira not only has plenty of charm but also lots to do! This is the 48-hour travel guide to the coolest 2 days in Morocco for where to stay, eat and truly relax in Essaouira.

I've been lucky enough in the past 2 years to visit Morocco multiple times but I hadn't yet visited any of the coast. When the opportunity came up to visit the windy city of Essaouira I jumped at the chance. As a result, after our few days in Marrakech we took the two and a half hour drive to the seaside city of Essaouira in search of relaxation and serenity.

STAY

For refined Moroccan style with a European edge stay at the boutique hotel Madada Mogador where we got the warmest welcome. The hotel boasts super chic interiors with just the right level of simplicity, plus breakfasts with the best views out to sea. And within a 1-minute walk to the souks, smack-bang in the centre of the city.

Make sure to get back to the hotel just before sunset for their refreshing lemon water and the most epic sunsets!

SHOP

Check out the souks in the centre of the city, within the ancient castle walls. Not only are they much smaller in size than some of the other traditional markets in other larger cities within Morocco, but they are also a lot more relaxed. This means less chaos which really allows for more casual browsing without the pressure. The souks of Essaouira have a lot of choices too from the usual Moroccan slippers to kaftans, carpets and other interiors.

EAT

For the best food in Essaouira and the best food I've had in long time - Le Table wins. Go for any of the seafood or fish on the menu to really make the most of the experience. The incredible Clam linguine, in particular, has to have a special mention for how fresh, and delicious it was! The atmosphere is fun and relaxing with a live guitarist as a regular during the evening. Pick the Royal Mojitos as the cocktail of choice to really start your night.

For a chilled out lunch, the place to go is by the seaside at Ocean Vagabonds. Not only is the food affordable and tasty with large salads and super fresh juices, the vibe is surfer -chic.  The perfect way to spend an afternoon right on the beach... If you are up for it, there are also plenty of activities straight in front of Vagabonds to take advantage of; including surfing and kite-surfing.

SHOP

For those not interested in markets, Le Comptoir Oriental has enough interior inspiration to make you want to change your whole home decor style. From traditional Moroccan furniture to tableware there are too many gorgeous home pieces to name.

Bring home the best argan oil from Sidi Yassine; a boutique with a huge variety of argan oils infused with other herbs like Verbena for truly amazing moisturising oil with the best natural scents.

DO

The warm, sunny climate and windy nature make Essaouira the perfect place to give surfing or kite-surfing a go.

For when you've had enough of the wind travel twenty minutes inland for an afternoon by the pool at Le Jardin des Douars for true serenity in super luxe surroundings. The hotel offers a day fare for a shuttle from where you are staying plus pool access and lunch which I highly recommend.
