A Microcurrent facial is something I have dabbled with a little over the years, often as part of a multifunctional professional facial treatment. In my twenties, I admittedly did not understand the function of these facials or the impact they could have on my skin.
However, fast forward to 2021 and microcurrent facials are everywhere, and with good reason! So, when FOREO reached out and asked me to try their BEAR and BEAR mini devices I was excited to see the effects of the treatment on my skin now that I’m in my 30s.
So if you are interested, read on to find out all about microcurrent facials. I'll be answering some of your most asked questions surrounding the FOREO Bear device and divulging my personal experience with the treatment.
What is a Microcurrent Facial Treatment?
A microcurrent facial or at-home microcurrent device is a tool that is used to help lift the appearance of the skin, and enhance definition in your face, sculpting it in the process. It does this by using a low-level current that essentially mimics the body’s natural electrical current. These devices and treatments were actually originally created to help patients with facial paralysis, but doctors soon started to realise their effects could be used for more cosmetic purposes!
The device is able to enhance the definition in your face by helping to activate collagen in your dermis layer of the skin by using this electrical current. If wrinkles are a concern as well as lifting, these toning devices for the face will also help.
Does a Microcurrent Facial Hurt?
Most devices are not painful at all. In my own personal experience, the maximum you will feel is a small tingling sensation around certain areas of your face such as your hairline.
What are the BEAR & BEAR Mini by FOREO Sweden?
Both the FOREO BEAR and the FOREO BEAR Mini are microcurrent facial devices that use T-sonic pulsations / or electrical currents to tone your face. Essentially, it is a workout for your face! These devices work with an App to help guide you and deliver the best results. You are also able to customise the pulsations to your specific needs.
What are the Different Features of the FOREO BEAR vs BEAR mini?
Both are microcurrent devices that use T-sonic pulsations to sculpt the face. The FOREO BEAR and BEAR mini have the same satisfying ergonomic design, which makes them easy to hold and use in your hand. (The BEAR mini is slightly smaller.) With both, the treatment time is 2 minutes and they both are rechargeable by USB, making things super easy and convenient. After using the devices for just over 2 months I still haven’t needed to charge either of them!
One of the main differences between the devices is the intensity. With the BEAR you have up to 5 microcurrent intensity levels, which, coupled with the larger size means you can really cover your full face with the treatment (as well as doing more targeted treatments).
As the FOREO BEAR mini is a smaller device, the microcurrent spheres are also smaller and so, the microcurrent intensity levels only go up to 3. This means it is great for travel and more targeted, lighter treatments, but does not provide the intensity of the larger size or such a full treatment.
In terms of aesthetic, the FOREO BEAR comes in fuchsia and the BEAR MINI is available in a pale pink or lavender shade.

How do I use FOREO BEAR?
Both the FOREO BEAR and the BEAR mini are incredibly easy to use! When you first get the device, you need to download the App. The App essentially gives you a step-by-step video tutorial on how to use the device, so you can follow along if you like, which is really handy.
You start off by applying either the FOREO SERUM SERUM SERUM or another water-based serum to help the device glide across your skin easily. Then, personalise the intensity of the microcurrent facial depending on how intense you would like the T-sonic pulsations to be.
Glide the metal spheres in an upward direction across the face, starting at the bottom of your jaw and working your way up. The total treatment only lasts 2 minutes and makes it easy to slip into your current skincare routine.
What are the benefits of the FOREO BEAR?
The benefits of the FOREO BEAR and BEAR Mini microcurrent devices are the increased collagen production and lifting impact on your face. With both devices, you will notice a tightening sensation on your skin as well as a lift. Over time, the stimulation of the current also helps tackle fine lines and wrinkles due to increased cell growth. With both devices (as well as any microcurrent facial), you will start to notice the long term impact if you stay consistent with your treatments. There is a reason these devices are often referred to as the 5-minute facelift! For me, both FOREO devices provide an immediate lifting effect, as well as a long term glow. After each 2 minute treatment, I really do notice a lift, especially around my eyes, eyebrows and cheekbones. As I suffer from puffiness first thing in the morning, I find it a great treatment to wake my face up at the start of the day.
Although challenging to capture on camera, I've taken Foreo bear before and after photos below of my face for you to see any immediate effects. You can see on the before photo my face is quite a bit more swollen, whereas on the after photo the device has really helped depuff and slim down my face with my cheekbones looking a lot more pronounced.

What are the Side Effects of Microcurrent Facials? Are There Any?
Microcurrent facials and the FOREO microcurrent devices, in particular, are incredibly safe. For those still feeling a little hesitant about dipping their toes into the microcurrent universe, you might be relieved to know that the BEAR devices come with a built-in anti-shock system. This means it measures your skin’s resistance to electricity and adjusts the microcurrent output to best suit your skin.
Each facial toning device is so easy to use that there is no need to feel nervous. It really is quite fool-proof!
What is my Preference? Do I Prefer the BEAR Mini or the Bear by FOREO?
I can honestly say both devices are great for a microcurrent facial, however, I tend to gravitate toward the FOREO BEAR more. Although I noticed short term and long term effects of using both devices, I prefer the larger BEAR device due to its size; it means I am able to cover my full face more easily.
The larger size fits in my hand more easily and I felt a bigger impact due to the extra levels of intensity I could reach with the FOREO BEAR. I feel like the FOREO BEAR Mini will be great for travel due to the slightly smaller size but, in terms of my day-to-day, the FOREO BEAR is what I reach for.
Since I am still relatively young, skin tightening wasn’t something I was necessarily focusing on, but this treatment has actually become the step I look forward to the most in my beauty routine. A glowing complexion and a sculpted face is something I was looking for, and instead of finding it in products, I found it in this 2-minute treatment.
Stress tends to show up on my face in the form of jaw tension and I found the treatment helped to relax my muscles as well as provide the instant gratification I was looking for. If you are looking for an alternative to gua sha, a treatment where you can notice the immediate results as well as something that will improve your skin over time, then the FOREO BEAR is well worth it!
