What actually is Slugging in Skincare?

[5 MINUTE READ]

Have you heard of slugging? Because, as of two days ago, we certainly hadn’t! In today's article, our contributing writer Ella breaks down the latest skincare trend that you need to know about!

Ella has sensitised, oily and acne-prone skin.

What Is Slugging?

Slugging is a trend that has actually been around for years but is only now being named and famed by skincare influencers, such as James Welsh, for its protective and soothing abilities.

Slugging in skincare involves applying a layer of petroleum jelly (think Vaseline) to your skin, to seal in the hydration from your previous products, and prevent trans epidermal water loss.

The process is called slugging because, after the petroleum jelly has been applied, your face looks like a slug has tracked across it... lovely, right?

Why Should You 'Slug'?

Slugging is a wonderful, easy way of protecting and rebuilding your skin barrier. If you’ve gone a little overboard with exfoliation, had an allergic reaction flare-up, or are simply suffering from the recent drop in temperature, slugging is a great way of soothing your skin and restoring its balance.

Those with dry, dehydrated, sensitive, and eczema-prone skin will certainly benefit from slugging, but that’s not to say those with oily skin can’t incorporate it into their routines too!

Contrary to popular belief, petroleum jelly doesn't actually clog pores and cause acne as, due to its occlusive nature, it can’t penetrate your skin deep enough to have any negative effect. That being said, it’s best to avoid using this method on active acne that’s already at the surface of your skin, as it could potentially cause more congestion.

How Do You Slug?

Try slugging as the last step in your nighttime skincare routine, after you’ve applied all serums and moisturisers. You don’t need a thick layer - in this case, more is not more - and you can use it all over your face or just in the areas that require a little extra TLC. Wash it off in the morning, with a gentle cleanser, to reveal plumped and hydrated skin!
